An inferior but less abstract defense of the importance of theology proper is the way that ethics flow downstream from it. If you imagine that power or authority are the heart of God's identity, you are never more than a misstep from an elaborate paganism. Thinking clearly about God is our only hope of imitating him
That said, I'm not sure theology is the only or even best way to do this. I think the distinction between concept and percept is very salient for that discussion.
I don't think it's inferior, I think you're spot on. Theology cannot be divorced from our ethics. If God is truly good and we become more holy when we reflect on His holiness, than the outflow of that should be a moral and ethical framework for life. I appreciate you sharing this!
This reminds me of a beautiful conversation I had with a gentle elderly man who approached me to say hello at a church I was visiting 6 months ago. He’d given me his card which had said Rev Dr _____ _____ on it and I twigged he had a PHD in theology.
I admitted I really didn’t know much about God and he responded quietly “Yeah… after I did my PHD I realised I didn’t really know anything either…”
This rocks, brother 👏🏽
Thank you my friend!
